5 Things to Consider When Choosing Plant-Based vs Stainless Steel Kids Plates

At EcoCubs, we obviously recommend both plant-based plates and stainless steel kids plates...

But we know that choosing the right kids’ dinnerware can feel tricky, and one material might be more suited than the other depending on your child’s age, stage, and personality. Here are five quick things to consider when deciding which might work best for your little bears.

1. Durability

  • Plant-based plates are surprisingly strong for natural materials, but they do need a little more TLC over time to keep looking their best. They’re lightweight, making them easy for little hands to carry and manage independently; however, if they are dropped at certain angles or heights, they are more susceptible to breaking. This means they might not be the best choice for little ones in the middle of their “tantrum era”! They do need a little more TLC over time to stay looking their best.
  • Stainless steel plates however, are almost indestructible! They can withstand drops, highchair spills, and any particularly energetic toddler phase. If your child is prone to tossing plates or just learning to feed themselves, stainless steel can be a lifesaver. It's one of the main factors we considered when designing our range, and these stainless steel plates are made from the highest quality 304 food-grade stainless steel!

2. Environmental Impact

  • Plant-based Dinnerware is made from all natural renewable materials and are compostable, making them a great choice for families focused on sustainability. That said, they do need some care at the end of their life to ensure they’re disposed of properly (e.g., in compost or green waste not landfill).
  • Stainless steel is fully recyclable and extremely durable. They can go straight into Australian kerbside recycling bins at the end of their life, making them a long-lasting, eco-friendly option with minimal fuss.

3. Cleaning and Maintenance

  • Both plant-based and stainless steel plates are dishwasher-friendly and easy to clean. Plant-based plates may need a little extra care to maintain their finish, while stainless steel is virtually maintenance-free. This makes stainless steel particularly handy for those extra-messy stages of childhood.

4. Safety and Microwave Use

  • Plant-based plates are naturally non-toxic and microwave-safe, making reheating meals simple and safe.
  • Stainless steel plates are also non-toxic but cannot go in the microwave, so it's best to heat meals aother way and then transfer to the stainless steel.

5. Style and Mealtime Fun

  • Plant-based plates come in soft, natural colours and playful designs, which can make mealtimes more engaging and fun for children.
  • Stainless steel plates however, have a sleek, modern, minimalist appearance, perfect for families who prefer a contemporary style. Both options are stylish — it’s really about what suits your family’s tastes.

The Bottom Line: Plant-Based vs Stainless Steel Kids Plates

We truly believe that both plant-based and stainless steel kids plates are excellent choices, and in most households, having a mix of both works beautifully. That said, one may be more suited to your child depending on their stage of life, personality, and mealtime habits.

For toddlers navigating highchair spills or learning to feed themselves, the almost indestructible stainless steel may be more practical. For older children who can handle their plates carefully, the lightweight, microwave-safe plant-based plates can add fun and convenience to mealtimes.

Ultimately, both options are safe, durable, and dishwasher-friendly- it’s all about finding what works best for your family and the best bit is that they're both sustainable and non-toxic options for your home!
